Vincenzo Lombardo

Vincenzo Lombardo PhD, born in 1964, is an Associate Professor of Informatics, at the University of Turin, Italy (Department of Informatics).

He doctorated in Computer Science in the Turin-Milan University Consortium (1993). He is the President of CIRMA (Centre for Research on Advanced Multimedia).

At public company Virtual Reality & Multi Media Park, he has run the Art-Science Alliance Laboratory (ASA Lab) from 2004 to 2012 (see videos), as a multimedia designer and producer.

He has been the director of the EU-funded project VEP (Virtual Electronic Poem), of the national project DramaTour, of the project CADMOS (Character-centred Annotation of Dramatic Media ObjectS).

His research concerns methodologies, models and applications of informatics, and AI in particular, for interdisciplinary challenges, such as semantic annotation and visualization for heritage metadata, multimedia design and applied graphics, natural language processing and cognitive modeling. His papers are published in international journals, books, conference proceedings. He is also active as a multimedia designer and producer.

VEP (Virtual Electronic Poem): archaelogy of a multimedia masterpiece of the 20th century, with many virtual reality installations, hosted all over the world, and best art paper prize at ACM Multimedia 2006;

Audio and multimedia (2002-2014, textbook in Italian, with Andrea Valle, 4 editions), used in many universities and conservatories in Italy;

Drammar (2005-2018, wiki and ontology for drama, with Rossana Damiano and Antonio Pizzo, ongoing work), employed in tasks of drama heritage preservation and analysis, with honorable mention for best paper at ICIDS Conference 2014 and nomination for best paper at ACM Symposium on Document Engineering 2017;

Earley-type recognizer for dependency grammars (1996, with Leonardo Lesmo), mentioned in dependency parsing literature (e.g., slides of course L545 at Indiana University) and handbook of contemporary research in dependency and valency.
